Webble
Webble is a little Windows utility
for encoding upper-ascii characters for use in
WWW pages. Any text which is run through the Webble
convertor will display correctly on any browser,
on any platform.
Upper-ASCII characters are the
letters which are included in a standard Windows
font, but are not part of the basic English-language
alphabet. These include accented characters, umlauts,
tildes and so on.
If you want to use these characters
on a web page, you have to enter them as special
HTML escape codes ("©" , for
example, is the escape code for a copyright symbol).
If you don't do this, Macs and PCs will display
these characters differently, because the character
maps are different in the two operating systems.
Where there are no escape codes
for a particular upper-ASCII character, Webble
will replace it with a suitable alternative from
the lower ascii set.
To download Webble, click one
of the Download buttons above. Webble is distributed
as freeware, and you may use it without payment.
